How to revise AI-assisted writing without losing your argument

Start with the assignment rules and your own argument, not a detector score. Verify each claim against a real source, revise the structure, then improve wording one passage at a time. Compare any suggested rewrite with the original and disclose permitted AI assistance according to your instructor’s requirements before submitting.

What AI help does this assignment allow?

Check the syllabus and the instructions for this particular task. Permission to brainstorm is not automatically permission to generate a draft, and permission to check grammar is not automatically permission to rewrite whole paragraphs. If the rule is unclear, describe the exact operation you want to use when asking your instructor.

A useful question is: ‘May I use a rewriting tool to suggest clearer wording for a paragraph I drafted, if I review every change and disclose the assistance?’ Keep the answer. Do not assume that a commercial tool’s academic-integrity page overrides a course policy.

What should I revise before individual sentences?

Write your thesis in one plain sentence and summarize the job of each paragraph. If a paragraph does not support the argument, improve its purpose or remove it before polishing its vocabulary. The UNC Writing Center distinguishes substantive revision from proofreading: fixing commas will not repair weak evidence or a missing argument.

Make a short reverse outline using the draft you actually have, rather than the outline you meant to follow. Look for repeated points, an objection you have ignored and claims introduced too late. Move material before asking a tool to smooth the transitions.

How do I keep a fluent rewrite from changing the facts?

Check names, dates, quotations, numbers and references against the underlying sources. A polished sentence can still be false. Save the original wording beside a proposed rewrite and look specifically for changes in certainty: ‘may help’ becoming ‘solves’ is a substantive change, not a stylistic improvement.

A source title or citation that looks plausible is not enough. Open the source and confirm it supports the particular statement. If you cannot locate it, remove or replace the claim. Do not ask a humanizer to make an unsupported claim sound more convincing.

  • Does the source exist and support this claim?
  • Are quotations exact and attributed?
  • Have uncertainty and qualifications survived?
  • Did a rewrite introduce a new example or number?

What does a careful sentence revision look like?

Teaching example, written for this guide, not a measured Cortex output: ‘It is important to note that the implementation of shaded waiting areas may potentially improve the experience of bus passengers.’ A tighter version is: ‘Shaded waiting areas may make waiting for the bus more comfortable.’

The revision removes a throat-clearing introduction and a redundant qualifier while preserving ‘may.’ It does not claim that shade increases ridership, reduces delays or produces a proven health outcome. Those would require separate evidence. Natural voice means expressing the supported point clearly, not adding personal anecdotes that never happened.

Read both versions aloud. The best version is the one you understand and can defend, even if it is not the most impressive-sounding suggestion. Technical terminology should stay when it carries necessary meaning.

How can I review a passage in Cortex?

The Humanize page accepts a sample of up to 300 words. Split View is designed to keep your original beside a rewrite and request detector results for both. Its processing connections must be available; an unavailable notice is not a completed rewrite or a detector result.

When results are available, inspect changes in argument, evidence and voice before deciding what to keep. The detector score can move in either direction. Cortex does not guarantee that a rewrite preserves every fact, nor does a lower score prove originality or satisfy your school’s rules. Keep your genuine source draft outside the tool.

  • Choose one passage with a clear revision goal.
  • Keep an untouched copy of your draft.
  • Compare each proposed change with your sources.
  • Keep, adapt or reject suggestions individually.
  • Save the final version with your own notes.

How should I acknowledge allowed AI assistance?

Follow the disclosure or citation format your instructor requires. A process note might identify the tool, the specific task it assisted with and the checks you performed. Write only what actually happened. Do not use a generic declaration that claims independent authorship if a tool wrote substantive portions of the work.

For example, if true and permitted: ‘I used a rewriting tool to suggest shorter phrasing for my introduction. I reviewed the suggestions against my original draft, checked the supporting sources and chose the final wording.’ This example is a disclosure pattern, not institutional approval or a universal citation style.

Before submission, read the assignment rubric once more. Confirm that you can explain the argument without relying on the tool, that all borrowed ideas are credited and that the submitted work meets the actual learning objective.

Common questions

Does humanizing remove the need to cite a source?

No. Rephrasing someone else’s ideas does not make them yours. Cite the underlying source and disclose AI assistance when your course requires it.

Can I use this workflow without any AI tools?

Yes. Reverse outlining, fact-checking, reading aloud and comparing drafts are useful revision practices on their own.
