Terms of Service

These terms are an agreement between you and Cortex (“Cortex”, “we”, “us”) governing your use of the website, tools and browser extension at cortex-studytool.app. By using Cortex you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use the service.

Who can use Cortex

You must be at least 13 years old, and old enough to form a binding contract where you live, to use Cortex. If you use it on behalf of an institution, you confirm you are allowed to accept these terms for it.

What Cortex does

Cortex helps you revise your own writing, estimate how an AI detector reads a text, compare versions side by side, and, through the browser extension, capture study material and type text at a natural pace. The tools assist your work. They do not replace your judgment, your sources or your responsibility for what you submit.

Academic integrity

You are responsible for following the rules of your school, course or institution, including any requirement to disclose AI assistance. Cortex does not grant academic permission and must not be used to misrepresent authorship, fabricate a drafting history or submit work in a way your institution prohibits. Using the service does not excuse you from your own academic obligations.

No guaranteed outcomes

Detector scores are estimates produced by third-party detectors that change over time and can be wrong in both directions. We do not guarantee any detector result, grade, admission, originality finding or other outcome. Humanized text can change meaning or introduce claims that need evidence, so review every result before you rely on it.

Accounts

Some features need an account. You are responsible for the accuracy of your details and for keeping your password safe, and you are responsible for activity under your account. Tell us promptly if you suspect unauthorized use. We may suspend or close an account that violates these terms or is used to harm the service or others.

Plans, billing and cancellation

Free sample tools are offered with usage limits and no account. Paid plans, when available, are billed in advance on a recurring basis at the price shown at checkout through our payment processor, and they renew automatically until you cancel. You can cancel at any time from your dashboard; cancellation stops the next renewal and your plan stays active until the end of the paid period. Except where the law requires otherwise, payments already made are non-refundable. We may change prices or plan features with reasonable notice, and price changes take effect on your next renewal.

Acceptable use

Do not use Cortex to break the law, to infringe anyone's rights, to submit content you have no right to share, to disrupt or reverse-engineer the service, to get around usage limits, or to violate the terms of the third-party providers that power the tools. We may limit or suspend access to protect the service and its users.

Your content and ownership

You keep ownership of the text you submit. You grant us the limited permission needed to process it and return your result, including sending it to the providers that run the tools. The Cortex name, software and design remain ours. We grant you a personal, revocable, non-transferable right to use the service under these terms.

Availability, disclaimers and liability

The service is provided “as is” and “as available” and may have limits, changes or downtime. To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim implied warranties, and we are not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential losses, or for academic, disciplinary or financial outcomes arising from your use of the service. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits rights that cannot be limited under the law that applies to you.

Changes, termination and contact

We may update these terms as the service changes; we will revise the date above and, for material changes, give clearer notice. You may stop using Cortex at any time, and we may suspend or end access if you breach these terms. For questions about these terms, contact support@cortex-studytool.app.
